Artists in Post-Katrina New Orleans
Open Studios Event
The Open Studio Weekends for Marigny and Bywater artists was founded in 2004 by artists Jose Torres Tama and Pati D'Amico in an effort to bring attention to the grassroots art scene and large concentration of creative individuals in these two historic New Orleans neighborhoods. The event has evolved to include artists in the Treme, Esplanade Ridge, and the lower French Quarter.
For many artists, opening the doors to their homes and studios offers a unique opportunity to allow the public to experience the sacred spaces where art is made. Our neighborhoods benefit greatly by the presence of such collective creativity, and the viewing public is exposed to emerging and established artists who are invested in their community.
Participating artists may differ for each event so please check our latest press release and map to see whose studios will be open. |

Our mission is to add to the revitalization of the Marigny/Bywater area while ensuring that the neighborhood retains its cultural diversity and working class character. As both artists and residents, we are concerned with rising rents, gentrification, and commercial development that threatens the creative and working class communities.
We are forming a collective voice to align ourselves with other Marigny/Bywater residents to prevent displacement by outside developers who seek to dramatically alter our historic neighborhoods in the name of progress. Communication, outreach and interaction with the public by resident studio artists will substantially aid in the cultural enhancement of the Marigny and Bywater and the entire New Orleans community.
